February - and the Oldest Profession.

Body:

Dear Readers,

We have always been dismayed at the bewildering hypocrisy of the way prostitutes and prostitution are thought of, spoken about and portrayed in society. After all they are only giving society (especially males) what it wants, nay demands, and in GREAT quantity. So let us have a little look at aspects of this old profession and 'Ladies of the Night'.

Click read more to see the blog.

Penguins do it, Vasa Parrots do it, even Monkeys with fleas do it, Lets do it, lets ..... well you know the song and Cole Porter wasn't talking about anything other than sex. We want it more than anything else and males are willing to pay. Some species of female Penguins will seek a male, other than her mate, to have sex with her in exchange for a nice stone he has to use for her nest. The female Vasa Parrot will aggressively have sex with many males so that none of them know who is the father of her eggs so all of them will provide her with food for her chicks just in case they are theirs. Female Macaque monkeys will offer their sexual favours to males provided payment 'upfront' (usually grooming, but also food) is made.

In a sense the game of life is mostly about Prostitution. Women have something that men crave for - constantly - so it seems only logical that they would try to 'sell' their wares to the highest bidder, which is sometimes a lot and sometimes very little or just to survive. Tell us, what is the difference?

An attractive girl catching the best provider she can for marriage.

A beautiful young lady hanging off the arm of one of the rich and famous.

A Courtesan enjoying the high life offered by the wealthy and powerful in exchange for  'being available'.

A high class Madam charging $5000 for a whole night.

A Mademoiselle offering sexual pleasures for an hour or so at $300.

A Call Girl to pop round and pop you off for $150.

A woman of the street making 20 Euros for a five minute gratification.

A housewife in a stale marriage who allows relief to her husband to maintain harmony in the home.

An unfortunate woman, trapped by some circumstance, who submits to sex so that she won't get beaten up.

They are all 'selling' their sex, in one form or another, for payment be it financial or something else in kind - even the last.

Prostitution is one of the biggest industries globally (quite amazing considering it is illegal most places in the world) and without CUSTOMERS there is no business. So society privately embraces and actively participates in prostitution - in a grand way - but publicly disgusts itself. How Strange.

Here are a few snippets from the history pages:

Christianity has not always thrown a wet blanket on prostitution, as church-controlled brothels were not uncommon in medieval Europe. One such brothel, named 'abbaye', was restricted to Christians and its female residents were required to observe the hours of prayer and regularly attend religious services.

It was common in the 1400's in Venice to encourage young men to seek prostitutes in order to guard against homosexuality.

During the mid 1800's, statistics show there were approximately six thousand brothels and eighty to a hundred thousand prostitutes working in metropolitan London alone.

In early sixteenth century Europe, harlots and courtesans were referred to as 'nuns' and a brothel was a 'nunnery'. The expression 'Get thee to a nunnery' was actually an encouragement to go to a brothel.

Pope John XII used the Basilica of Saint John Lateran as a brothel. He died suddenly while engaged in adultery.

A hotbed of religion and sexuality Babylon required that women serve as prostitutes at the temple before getting married. Historians report that unattractive women sometimes had to serve three to four years before finally being chosen.

In order to fully finance the cost of constructing Saint Peter's Basillica in Rome, there was instituted a Church imposed prostitution tax, whose revenue exceeded even That from the sale of indulgences.

There were so many prostitutes selling their wares in early nineteenth century Vienna that the ratio was roughly one whore for every eight adult men. Needless to say, not being the era of safe sex, six to seven thousand women were hospitalised annually with Venereal disease.

There is a dark side, a Very Dark Side with an estimated over 2 million young people (mostly women) being sold and traded into sex slavery each and every year - but that is for another time.

At least we can say one thing in our Dollocracy. It's legal, It's anytime, there are no time limits, anything goes, no one gets hurt and it's free - well almost, we do need the occasional 'silicone fix' from time to time. :D

I guess in the early days, the cavemen just took what they wanted without paying ;) :D . But now we are so called civilised we pay.

Thanks muzza,  :) As ever, a very interesting read, a great insight  and some astonishing facts

about the worlds oldest profession!:O I wonder what people will be saying about it in 2000 years time!?:O

And thanks for the very stunning pic of Nony. :)

i aGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAY AND WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT IN COUNTRIES WHERE PROSTITUTION IS DE-CRIMINALISED SEX-RELATED CRIME IS ALMOST NON EXISTANT. I PERSONALLY HAVE SPENT TIME WITH WORKING GIRLS IN THE U.K. FRANCE AMSTERDAM AND PRAGUE AND ALWAYS TREAT THEM WITH THE RESPECT AND COURTOSY THEY DESERVE.

Thanks guys, we do hope you enjoy our little monthly blogs. To quote from the movie Forrest Gump "Like a box of chocolates, You never know what your going to get"

And thanks philinostine for bringing up what was implied but not said. With such a big topic it is not easy (and takes a lot of time) to condense into a short one page blog all that is researched and still convey the essence and, perhaps, get people thinking beyond. They do deserve our respect and courtesy, not least for being the unsung counsellors and comforters of the times.

taken aback by the great article ;)
i wonder why 2 french words are used in describing prostitutes (madame and mademoiselle) whereas we use them to be very respectful to women :?
spicy historical facts }:) ?

i look forward to an article about "why sex is so essential to species" ;)

cheers,

Different words to describe the women in the various scenarios were deliberate. Partly to show some of the roles women have to play in society, partly to illustrate that 'selling sex' is not a clear black and white 'disrespectable prostitution' situation and partly to challenge the thinking regarding they way society behaves towards it. Hypocrisy was the word we used.

Few words of English are in the French language whereas many French words make up English (thanks to the Norman conquest - 1066 and all that). As a consequence English is more flexible in word association - but word association is exactly one of the points we were making.

The word prostitute brought to mind 'not respectable'. This is not fair. We did say 'There is a dark side' with criminal elements and slavery but generally the women in that case are without choice. And even then and for those who have choice, in order to do their job they have to be understanding, tolerant, friendly, accommodating, vivacious and gregarious - sometimes in very difficult and perhaps dangerous circumstances. They also have to be efficient, sensible and businesslike. Some of the nicest, kindest, good women are 'in the business'. We also made the point that without customers there is no business.

Who is more 'respectable'? A woman who rejoices in her sexuality and is prepared to share the joy, relief and happiness it brings to others or the tight lipped, religious bigots dressed in black or hiding behind some veil (we spoke about hair many many blogs ago) who would stone the former to death or burn them at the stake?

No one is a prostitute all the time but everyone is a prostitute at some time in one form or another.

In French news currently:-

In a colourful exchange in a recent radio interview, one of Mr. Strauss-Kahn's lawyers, Henri Leclerc, said the former IMF chief wasn't aware that the women at these parties were prostitutes. "He could well have not realised it, because you see, in these parties, one is not necessarily clothed and I challenge you to tell a naked prostitute from a naked worldly woman,"

Worldly Indeed Smile

In regard to your request 'why sex is so essential to species'. That is going to be hard to fit on one page and will take a lot of research and editing but we will put it on 'to do' list for later.

For something that has been around for, well forever, it amazes me that prostitution has such a low reputation in many parts.  We have never really broken out of the religiously repressed middle ages, despite the claims of a fair and free society these days.

And I thought engineering was the oldest profession.  But then if you already have a cave you don't need to build it.
